The project

Grant for new contemporary film writing

The Cinémathèque idéale des banlieues du monde (CIBM) was founded in 2022 as a partnership between the Ateliers Médicis in Clichy-Montfermeil and the Centre Pompidou Paris. Initiated by filmmaker Alice Diop, the CIBM aims to question the logics of assignment and invisibilisation, focusing on the critical relationship with works of art and their reception.

"The aim of the Cinémathèque idéale des banlieues du monde is not only to record the memories and stories of working-class neighbourhoods, but also to supplement the production of images that has only been made from the centre, by people who had the power and the right to narratives. It's about telling, drawing and archiving these stories, which are part of French history, by placing them in an institutional space where they are still largely absent. It's about filling in the gaps, the absences, the silences." Alice Diop.

As part of the development of its cultural project, following an initial experimental phase, the CIBM is now looking to implement new initiatives, mainly in the area of support for film production. The aim of this new initiative is to develop other ways of telling the story of cinema. By setting up a grant dedicated to young artists and filmmakers interested in new contemporary writing, and thus helping other cinema stories to emerge.

With the creation of this grant, the Francis Kurkdjian Endowment Fund is delighted to be able to take the project a step further, both for the project itself and in the eyes of the world.
